Stop Rats Damaging Your Property

Rat damage to property is a serious problem for many people. A single rat is able to do thousands of pounds worth of damage to an expensive car or commercial stock in only a short space of time. So what can you do about it?

- Seal gaps.  Holes around badly fitting doors can let rodents into your storage facility.  Fix doors and walls so rats can't get through.  Remember they can chew through wood and plastic and that they can fit through a hole the size of a dime.  Fill holes with cement and sheet metal so they can't chew through.
- Trapping.  This is a traditional method of rat control. It may be effective but you've only got to miss one rat for damage to be seriously expensive with extended equipment downtime. A recent scientific paper showed that the annual cost of rat damage is nine billion dollars in the US alone.  This is based on data from 2009 so the figure could now be far higher than this.
- Rat repellents.  These are widely used and widely available but are often ineffective against a determined rat.
