Rats In Society |
In the famous Hindu Karni Mata Temple there are in the region of 20,000 rats. They are fed daily with milk and plentiful grain by many of the priests in the temple. They are thought to be the earthy vehicles for Ganesh, the elephant god.
The Hindus also believe that rats are the followers of Karni Mata who was a 14th century holy woman. Also that they will be cleverly reincarnated as revered Sadhus, Hindu holy men.
Ancient Romans of history had no separate words for rats and other mice, calling them the names 'mus maximus' as well as 'mus minimus' instead.
The rat is widely known as the first sign of the zodiac in China. People born under this sign are strongly believed to have rat-like qualities. These include intelligence and wastefulness. They get along famously with 'dragons' although not so well with 'horses'.
